Henry Cavill is looking forward to playing a new version of Superman in the DC Universe.
The Black Adam movie features the long-awaited return of Henry Cavill’s Superman, with the British actor reprising his role as the DC Comics hero for the first time in five years. While Cavill is only in the movie for a few seconds, Superman fans are already excited for the character’s future under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who were recently named co-heads of the newly-formed DC Studios at Warner Bros. Discovery.
A different Superman is on the way
Henry Cavill opened up about his return to the role fo Superman during a live recording of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast at 92NY in New York City. Speaking with host Josh Horowitz, Cavill expressed his excitement about his future as Superman and teased that fans should expect a “enormously joyful” take on the character in upcoming DC Comics movies, a departure from the dark and brooding version seen in films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
“The character means so much to me. It’s been five years now. I never gave up hope. It’s amazing to be here now talking about it again. There is such a bright future ahead for the character. I’m so excited to tell a story with an enormously joyful Superman.”
Later on in the discussion, Henry Cavill revealed that Warner Bros. asked him to shoot his Black Adam cameo while he was still in production on the third season of the Netflix series The Witcher. Cavill had to briefly step away from The Witcher to shoot the Black Adam scene, but he wasn’t allowed to tell the production team the reason behind his break.
“I went to Warner Bros. studio in the UK and got back in the suit. It was a very powerful moment for me. I wasn’t sure how I would feel… whether it would be something very emotionally connective because I put the Man of Steel suit back on. I chose that one in particular because of the nostalgia attached to the suit. It was important for me to be standing there and enjoying that moment. That is one of the top moments in my career. It feels great to have the opportunity to wear it again.”
A new Superman movie is in the early stages of development at Warner Bros, with Chuck Roven attached as a producer. Roven has been working on live-action DC Comics movies since 2005’s Batman Begins. The yet-to-be titled Superman project does not yet have a director or a writer.
Prior to his appearance in Black Adam, Henry Cavill’s Superman was last seen in 2017’s Justice League and Zack Snyder Cut of the movie on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. However, Cavill didn’t shoot any material for the Snyder Cut, which included new scenes with stars like Ben Affleck and Joe Manganiello.
