Hugh Jackman ruled out the possibility of playing Wolverine again in the MCU films.
Although Hugh Jackman retired from the role of Wolverine with the release of director James Mangold’s Logan, some fans wondered if there would ever be anything enticing enough to bring the actor back to the character in the future. After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and consequently gained the screen rights to the X-Men, many of those fans were curious to see if the prospect of appearing alongside members of the Avengers in the MCU would be an exciting enough idea for Hugh Jackman to reprise the role of Wolverine.
It wouldn’t be the first time Marvel Studios enlisted an actor to play a different version of a character they previously portrayed. Just last year, J. K. Simmons portrayed a modern version of J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Far From Home after having played the character in Sam Raimi’s original trilogy. However, Hugh Jackman told the Daily Beast that while he would have been excited about the idea of seeing Wolverine meet the MCU heroes had Disney’s acquisition happened earlier, he now believes it is time for a new actor to take on the role:
“Totally. Honestly, Marlow, if seven years ago that had happened I’d be like, “Oh yeah!” but I knew it was the right time for me to leave the party—not just for me, but for the character. Somebody else will pick it up and run with it. It’s too good of a character not to. It’s kind of like, you’re on your way home and your friend rings you and goes, Oh, dude, a new DJ just came on and the music is awesome, are you going to come back? And you say, Sounds good but… no. They’re fine with someone else.”
Marvel Studios confirmed plans to include mutants in the MCU during its presentation at San Diego Comic-Con2019. However, the studio is reportedly in no rush to introduce the X-Men to the MCU, meaning it will likely be some time before we learn who will replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
Here is the official synopsis for Hugh Jackman’s Logan:
In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.
Directed by James Mangold, Logan stars Hugh Jackman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Dafne Keen, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, Eriq LaSalle, Elizabeth Rodriguez, and Boyd Holbrook.
Logan is now available on Digital HD, Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
