Brad Winderbaum, the executive producer of Marvel’s I Am Groot for Disney Plus, has revealed when the series takes place in the MCU timeline.

I Am Groot is one of several new animated offerings coming to Disney Plus from Marvel Studios. The series will follow Baby Groot in his misadventures on various planets across the galaxy as he grows up.

With Groot having grown into adolescence as of the post-credits scenes for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Brad Winderbaum has cleared up when exactly I Am Groot takes place.

Baby Groot Returns

Speaking recently to ComicBook.com, executive producer Brad Winderbaum revealed that I Am Groot is set after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but before the film’s post-credits scenes.

One of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s post-credits scenes sees Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill talking to a teenage Groot, signifying a significant leap forward in time, as Groot had only been seen as an infant throughout the film.

Talking about the upcoming Disney Plus series, Brad Winderbaum confirmed that I Am Groot does indeed take place in this period of time, dispelling notions the series may have been set prior to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, or even in Groot’s original infancy (before his death and rebirth in the first Guardians film):

“It’s a narrow window, right? It takes place actually between the end of Guardians 2 and before the tag scene in Guardians 2. So, it’s in this narrow window where Groot in that kind of post toddler stage of development. And it was something that really excited [Guardians director] James [Gunn] and also, James also knew [I Am Groot director] Kirsten [Lepore]’s work and was excited about working with her as well.”

The first trailer for I Am Groot recently debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, giving fans their first look at toddler Groot in action. The series welcomes back Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot. The rest of the Guardians will return later this year in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, also on Disney Plus.

Groot most recently appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here’s the synopsis:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters. Meanwhile, I Am Groot is set to premiere on Disney Plus on August 10, 2022.
