Thor star Idris Elba, who played Asgardian god Heimdall, has teased the character’s return to the MCU following his post-credits appearanc in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Idris Elba’s Heimdall met his demise at the hands of Thanos in the opening scene of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. However, after Thor: Love and Thunder saw Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster also meet her end, a post-credits scene showing Jane’s arrival in Valhalla saw her greeted by Heimdall.
Now Idris Elba has suggested this may not be the last Marvel fans see of his Asgardian, with a potential future MCU project already in the works.
Marvel’s Next Heimdall Story
While promoting his latest film, Beast, Idris Elba was asked by Syfy whether he might be returning to the MCU to play Heimdall again.
The Luther star admitted he loved playing the character and seemingly teased another appearance from the Asgardian was already in the works at Marvel. However, like any true Marvel star, Elba refused to let slip any details about his next possible MCU appearance.
Responding to the question of Heimdall’s potential return, Idris Elba said:
“Heimdall is a beloved character, I love playing him. There may be something cooking.”
When pressed further on what exactly might be in the works for Heimdall, Elba said “I don’t know, I would tell you if I did. Well, probably not…”
While Heimdall now seems to be settled into a life in Valhalla, it looks like he could still have adventures lying ahead of him in the afterlife. Alternatively, Marvel may want to travel back in time and tell earlier stories from Heimdall’s life, or even re-introduce Idris Elba as a different version of Heimdall from elsewhere in the Multiverse.
There are countless possibilities for whatever Idris Elba is working on next with Marvel, but it sounds like Heimdall’s time in the MCU isn’t over just yet.
Heimdall’s latest appearance can be seen after the credis roll in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here is the synopsis:
The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the Thor solo film stars Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Taika Waititi, Russell Crowe, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.
