Disney Developing New Live-Action ‘Inspector Gadget’ Movie

Disney is developing a new live-action adaptation of the 1980’s animated series Inspector Gadget. 

THR reports that Saturday Night Live writers Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell have been hired to write the script for this new Inspector Gadget movie with Disney’s live-action Aladdin producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich attached to produce the new film under their Rideback banner. Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will oversee this Inspector Gadget movie.

The original Inspector Gadget animated series premiered in 1983 and ended in 1986 after 83 episodes. The Inspector Gadget series spawned a franchise that includes multiple new shows including a recent reboot that’s available exclusively to stream in the United States on Netflix.

Disney previously released a live-action Inspector Gadget movie in 1999 directed by David Kellogg and starring Matthew Broderick as the titular character and Rupert Everett as his nemesis Dr. Claw. Inspector Gadget (1999) grossed $134.4 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. A direct-to-video sequel, Inspector Gadget 2 starring French Stewart was released in 2003.

Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell, the writers for this new Inspector Gadget have also been tapped to develop the planned Home Alone reboot for Disney+. It remains unknown whether or not this film would be for theatrical distribution or an exclusive for Disney+.

Disney is set to launch its own streaming service called “Disney+” in the United States and Canada on November 12, 2019. Television projects being developed for Disney include Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter SoldierLokiWandaVisionHawkeyeWhat If?, and Lucasfilms’ Star Wars series’ The Mandalorian, a show centered on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor. Features films include remakes of Lady and the TrampHome Alone, and Night at the Museum.
