This marks the first time a trans character will appear in a live-action DC film.

Ivory Aquino Alysia Yeoh Batgirl

Ivory Aquino has joined the cast of Batgirl as Alysia Yeoh while filming continues in the United Kingdom.

Production on Batgirl is well underway, with recent set photos giving us our first looks at Leslie Grace suited up, DC connections, Brandon Fraiser’s Firefly, and hints at Michael Keaton’s Batman. According to Deadline, the cast for the HBO Max film is also growing with the addition of Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh.

Ivory Aquino’s Alysia Yeoh is a bartender who is Barbara Gordon’s best friend in the comics. Aquino’s casting also marks the first time a live-action DC film will feature a transgender character. Alysia Yeoh debuted in Batgirl (vol. 4) #1 from 2011. Aquino has appeared When They See Us, Tales of the City, When We Rise, FBI: Most Wanted, Lapsis, and Lingua Franca.

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing Batgirl, which is being planned as a movie for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The two most recently directed the 2020 box office hit Bad Boys for Life and episodes of the upcoming Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Christina Hodson, the screenwriter behind Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the script.

DC’s Batgirl movie is set to follow the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. Barbara was last seen in a live-action feature film in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin, with Alicia Silverstone playing the iconic DC Comics character. J.K. Simmons also stars as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser appearing as the villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton as Batman.

Batgirl will hit HBO Max sometime this year. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news on Ivory Aquino’s Alysia Yeoh in the upcoming HBO Max film, all the other DC projects in the pipeline, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
