J.K. Simmons says Batgirl will explore different aspects of Commissioner Gordon not previously seen in Justice League.

J.K. Simmons made his debut as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League in a brief role. The character’s screentime was slightly expanded in Zack Snyder’s Justice League but the star wasn’t given much to chew on. Those hoping to see more of Simmons in the DC Extended Universe will be pleased to know the star is already filming his scenes for Batgirl, where he’s expected to have a key role as Barbara Gordon’s father.

In a recent interview with A.Frame, J.K. Simmons candidly discussed the difference between his Commissioner Gordon in Justice League and the one he’ll portray in Batgirl.

“The tiny role that Commissioner Gordon played in Justice League was very businesslike and very, ‘Let’s see if we can stave off the end of the world!’ What appealed to me about this movie was from Jim Gordon’s point of voice, it’s really more a story about him as a guy and as a father and not just about the guy who’s turning on the Bat Signal and trying to keep the citizens of Gotham safe—although that’s obviously also a part of the story. But it was a chance to delve into a different aspect of the character.”

J.K. Simmons also went on to praise Batgirl lead, Leslie Grace, who comes fresh off her critically-acclaimed performance in the live-action rendition of In the Heights.

“She brings so much to it. I completely agree about In the Heights. She was really charming and compelling and charismatic in that—and she brings all of that to Batgirl in addition to pretty kickass stunt skills.”

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing Batgirl, which is being planned as a movie for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The two most recently directed the 2020 box office hit Bad Boys for Life and episodes of the upcoming Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Christina Hodson, the screenwriter behind Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the script for the DCEU film.

DC’s Batgirl movie is set to follow the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. JK Simmons also stars as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser will appear as the villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton is returning as his version of Batman.

Batgirl will hit HBO Max sometime this year. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news on Dylan O’Brien, as well as the future of the DCEU, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
