Will the Snyderverse return?

Fans have been calling for Zack Snyder to make his grand return to the DC Universe. Following a clip surfacing of Snyder expressing interest in returning, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn clarified his comments about the potential of the director working on a new superhero project.

Earlier this year, James Gunn revealed that Zack Snyder reached out to express his support for the new DC Universe plans, but had no intentions of returning to DC Studios himself. This was contradicted by Snyder himself a month later during the Justice League “Full Circle” event, where he claimed he was interested in continuing his story. This caused Gunn to clarify his statement, saying Snyder hadn’t mentioned anything to him about a potential return to the DCU.

While it’s certainly possible that Zack Snyder returns to direct a film or two in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, it’s unlikely his plans for a Justice League trilogy will ever see the light of day. Confusion over continuity has already kneecapped DC Studios at the box office, so it’s not likely Gunn, Snyder, or anyone else would want to repeat the cycle.

The SnyderVerse era is over for now

The term “SnyderVerse” refers to the interconnected film universe that Zack Snyder created, which began with Man of Steel and continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Those plans have been scrapped in favor of an interconnected DC Universe consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm.

Despite its mixed reception, the SnyderVerse has a dedicated fanbase that appreciates Zack Snyder’s DC Universe vision. Fans have praised the SnyderVerse films for their darker tone and mature storytelling. They have also criticized Warner Bros. and DC’s interference with Snyder’s DCU plans, which they believe resulted in the lackluster final product of Justice League.

In 2021, Zack Snyder released his four-hour-long Justice League cut on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. His version of Justice League was well received by fans and critics alike, who praised its improvement over the original version of the movie, which was overseen by Joss Whedon. The release of the Snyder Cut has reignited interest in the SnyderVerse and sparked speculation about its future.
