Batman: The Brave and The Bold is set to reboot the Caped Crusader for a whole new DC Universe. However, according to James Gunn, the script may not be making as much progress as many fans would like.
Ever since David Corenswet was cast in Superman: Legacy, fans have been wondering who would play the Caped Crusader opposite him in the DC Universe. Yet while fans have already started casting for Batman: The Brave and The Bold, James Gunn has been much slower on the draw, confirming they don’t even have a script yet to begin casting:
“There’s no script yet.” Gunn posted on Threads in response to a recent casting rumor “Ofc it’s false.”
While certainly disappointing for fans of the Caped Crusader, this may be the best case scenario. Batman: The Brave and The Bold will have to compete with multiple versions of the character from The Batman to the three variants found in The Flash. It’s a relief James Gunn is taking his time reinventing the character for the DC Universe, though hopefully it won’t take too much longer to find that perfect script!
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
