James Gunn has broken his silence on the recent reports regarding the future of the DC Universe.

Last night, The Hollywood Reporter dropped a story about James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios plans. Gunn and Safran are expected to present a multi-year plan for the DC Universe to Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav as soon as next week, though its contents are still a mystery to the general public. That is expected to remain the case for the foreseeable future.

James Gunn addresses the rumors about DC Studios

This morning, James Gunn took to his official Twitter page to comment on the Hollywood Reporter story, saying that “some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true and some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.” Clearly not much to go on, but Gunn and Safran have only been working at DC Studios for just over a month now.

Gunn went on to add the following: “Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time and we’re still just beginning. Peter and I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told and in the audience itself and there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation and gaming. But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities and the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far and to help rectify what has not. We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY and in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”

“As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters and the stories the time and attention they deserve and we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask and answer.”

The THR story claims that the current version of Wonder Woman 3 is dead as it does not fit with the vision of DC Studios. The trade also believes that the future of characters like Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam and Henry Cavill’s Superman is currently in limbo while Jason Momoa could be trading in his spear as Aquaman to take on the role of the DC Comics anti-hero Lobo.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.

According to reports, Gunn is expected to focus on the creative direction of the DC Universe while Safran will handle business and production. They will report directly to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav and collaborate with Warner Bros. Film Group co-heads Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy.
