The Suicide Squad director James Gunn debunked reports that Warner Bros. Discovery is considering bringing back David Ayer to direct a sequel to his 2016 version of Suicide Squad.
DC’s two Suicide Squad films technically take place in the same continuity, with Gunn’s 2021 DC entry serving as a sequel to Ayer’s 2016 film. However, most fans would consider Gunn’s film a soft reboot for the franchise, given that it radically overhauled the tone of the franchise and the characterization of several central characters.
David Ayer’s Suicide Squad generally failed to impress, while James Gunn’s showed a marked improvement. Gunn is currently working on a range of other DC projects with Warner Bros. Discovery.
No Sequel For David Ayer’s Suicide Squad
Taking to Twitter to respond to a claim Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to bring back David Ayer to direct a sequel to his version of Suicide Squad, James Gunn shut down the rumor in his iconically blunt style.
James Gunn was asked about a tweet sharing a rumor that Warner Bros. Discovery is considering making a third Suicide Squad film that would disregard Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, with Will Smith leading and David Ayer potentially directing.
Gunn, who is actively working with Warner Bros. Discovery and DC on his current slate of projects, responded to the question “is any of this real?” with a simple “It’s not.”
That’s a fairly definitive answer on the matter of a potential David Ayer helmed Suicide Squad sequel. Given that Ayer’s take on Suicide Squad was a bit of a letdown for audiences, while Gunn’s broadly impressed and even led to the launch of the hugely successful Peacemaker spin-off series, it’s probably wise that DC leaves the Suicide Squad in Gunn’s hands.
