Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has revealed he almost introduced the Marvel comics character Darkhawk in the second Guardians film.

Guardians of the Galaxy brought Marvel’s little-known team of spacefaring misfits into the mainstream, proving even the more obscure characters in the company’s catalogue could be a success when handled properly for the big screen. It’s not surprising then that the film got a sequel in 2017 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 doubled down on exploring the weird and unfamiliar corners of Marvel’s cosmic realm.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 introduced Ego the Living Planet, played by Kurt Russell; the comics’ original Guardians, reimagined as a band of Ravagers headed by Sylvester Stallone’s Starhawk; and the gold-skinned Sovereign. However, the film almost went even further by introducing Darkhawk. James Gunn had previously denied the character would appear in the film, after a Darkhawk figure was featured in an action figure line with other members of the Guardians of the Galaxy. However, in a recent tweet, Gunn revealed that Darkhawk was in fact almost introduced into the MCU in the second Guardians outing:

Darkhawk was introduced in Marvel comics in the 1990s. His real name is Christopher Powell and he discovered an amulet that allowed him to switch his body with a powerful android from another dimension, called Null Space. While the character was originally a more street-level, earthbound hero, the extradimensional origin of his powers gave him ties to the Marvel universe beyond Earth. The character would certainly have been a suitably strange and undeniably welcome addition to the lineup of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Here is the synopsis for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2:

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.
