Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, has confirmed that he had some adjustments made to the script for Thor: Love and Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder not only sees the return of Chris Hemsworth as Thor Odinson for his fourth solo outing in the MCU, but also features the Guardians of the Galaxy, with whom Thor was last seen heading to the stars at the end of Avengers: Endgame. With the Guardians’ next two appearances beyond Love and Thunder already lined up – in the Disney Plus exclusive The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the climactic Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – fans probably already expected James Gunn to have some input on how the cosmic team would be handled in Taika Waititi’s Thor film.

Asked on Twitter about how much influence he had over the script for Thor: Love and Thunder, the director gave a short and simple reply, but did reveal he had requested some adjustments be made. While it sounds like Gunn wasn’t involved extensively in rewrites and was likely not making adjustments to the film himself, it makes sense that the filmmakers would consult him to ensure that the Guardians’ story in Love and Thunder lines up with Gunn’s plans for the future Guardians of the Galaxy installments. Check out Gunn’s tweet below:

The first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder makes it seem as though the Guardians will only have a small role in the film, though fans will have to wait for the film’s release to find out whether this is the case or if Marvel’s hiding some surprises. Either way, James Gunn’s involvement with Love and Thunder is an encouraging sign that Marvel Studios remains committed to building a connected and cohesive universe.

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Love and Thunder:

The film finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Directed by Taika Waititi and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, the film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, and Russell Crowe.
