There’s more to Krypto than meets the eye! James Gunn took to social media to provide more information about the superdog’s design in Superman.
A new image from Superman was recently released to the public. While exciting in its own right, the internet exploded at the official confirmation that Krypto the Superdog would be making his debut in the film. However, just as with any announcement to come out of the new DC Universe, James Gunn quickly took to the net to shut down rampant conspiracies and answer questions about the pooch.
Many fans know Krypto best from the Krypto the Superdog show from Cartoon Network, where he was a talking hero in his own right. This led to dozens of questions about if the candescent canine would speak in Superman. James Gunn was quick to shut down these rumors on Bluesky, remarking that he doesn’t talk, unless you include barking.
Why Does Krypto Look Different In Superman?
Another common remark fans had about Krypto’s reveal in Superman is that he didn’t look like the iconic white Labrador many expected. However, James Gunn was quick to point out on Threads that Krypto has been depicted as plenty of different breeds across the DC Universe canon. And, because he’s also an alien, it’s unlikely that he would perfectly resemble any earthly breed.
Yet that doesn’t mean James Gunn didn’t have a specific design in mind when casting Krypto for Superman. In his official announcement post, Gunn revealed that the Superdog was based on his own dog, Ozu, who he adopted right before writing the film. He claims to have been inspired by his temperamental pooch, with Krypto’s role in the story shaping the film just as Ozu has shaped him in real life. Ozu, like Krypto, is also a mutt!
