The DC Universe just keeps getting bigger! James Gunn tells all about his next project as director and the potential for R-rated films at DC Studios.
James Gunn is shaping up to be a much more hands-on leader for DC Studios than Kevin Feige is for the MCU, with Gunn personally helming the first three projects to debut in the DC Universe reboot. This has left fans asking which projects he may end up writing or directing next. According to Gunn, there’s a few possibilities, and he wants to explore them all before deciding.
“I haven’t,” Gunn told Collider when asked about his next project in the DC Universe. “I’ve got like four different things that I could do, and I’m going to kind of jump back and forth between those things. I’m going to see which one really speaks to me, and that’s the one I’m gonna do.”
Fans have long been speculating that James Gunn could end up writing and directing The Authority film for the DC Universe. However, it’s more likely than not the four projects Gunn is referring to haven’t been announced by DC Studios. This is due to the initial slate being revealed as projects “in development”, to which the projects Gunn is referring to are very much not.
Will The DC Universe Be R-Rated?
New projects aren’t the only things James Gunn is exploring in the DC Universe. The director was recently asked if DC Studios would be open to R-rated movies joining its upcoming catalogue of projects. Gunn admitted that there is “more than one” project that could be Rated R that is close to being greenlit, and that he’s always open to all sorts of things.
“We’re not about that. We’re not about ‘See how it does.'” Gunn told Collider when asked if they’d test the waters with a single R-Rated movie before committing to more. “We’ve got one opportunity to take these characters and really press forward and do what we believe. I am a great believer that if we tell good, authentic stories, if a movie does well or doesn’t do as well, if you keep with that same philosophy, that you’re going to build a universe that people are going to love and want to be a part of for a long time.”
“People love that [Deadpool]. People love that format for that thing. You know Peacemaker is unrated, basically . So, we have all sorts. I like the idea of doing all sorts of different things.”
Fans are already going wild with speculation about which DC Studios projects may end up being Rated R, with some high contenders being The Authority and Paradise Lost. However, James Gunn’s attitude seems to suggest that ratings aren’t being tailored to what they think would be best for the DC Universe as a brand. Rather, his focus is on keeping ratings true to the stories they want to tell.
