Is Mr. Freeze making his way to Gotham? James Gunn gives his thoughts on the recent rumor for a new spin-off of The Batman.

With The Penguin being as much of a smash hit as it is, the internet has once again started to churn its rumor mill about what spin-off may be next out of The Batman universe. The one picking up the most traction currently focuses on a grounded take on Mr. Freeze. When asked about these rumors on Threads, DC Studios co-chair James Gunn gave a rather cryptic response.

“I haven’t heard that one but there are a lot of rumors out there this week. Some of them are true, some are partially true, and some aren’t true at all. If it’s fun for you to follow the unknowns, follow them, but don’t trust anything completely until you hear it from me or Peter (who is not online despite me seeing him tagged in stuff.)”

Given James Gunn is often rather direct when dispelling rumors about the DC Universe, many found it odd that he’d take such a softball approach to the Mr. Freeze rumor. This led many to believe that this would be the next spin-off to The Batman following its sequel hitting theaters. However, it seems that reality is often more disappointing than the fictions rumors allow to be spun.

James Gunn Debunks A Mr. Freeze Spin-Off

It wasn’t long before James Gunn was asked more directly about if the rumor off a Mr. Freeze spin-off film was true or not. When shown a headline that it would be the next movie to come to The Batman universe, the DC director responded flatly on Threads that it was untrue. However, he did like the idea, so it’s not impossible for the concept to come to life.

While Mr. Freeze may not be getting his own spin-off, there’s a lot of momentum behind the idea that he’s the villain in the upcoming sequel to The Batman. James Gunn liking the rumor, along with confirmation the film is taking place in a flooded Gotham during winter, could both be signs that this line of speculation might be correct as The Penguin barrels toward setting up the wider universe.
