The Batman universe is only getting bigger! Director Matt Reeves speaks on the upcoming sequel, as well as if the franchise will end as a trilogy.
With The Penguin set to release in just a few days, fans are itching for any news they can get about the upcoming sequel film for The Batman. Fans are expecting big things from the series, given Matt Reeves has touted it as a direct continuation and lead-into the next movie. When speaking on this dynamic, the director dropped a surprising tidbit about when the highly-anticipated film will be taking place in their franchise’s timeline.
“It’s still the same kind of trajectory of story, but the entry point for where Oz is is now that he’s further along as we enter that story than he would have been if we had started that story in the movie instead of by doing a series.” Reeves spoke of The Penguin before teasing the upcoming sequel. “The story plays out over the next weeks that take you toward the end of the year. We don’t play Christmas or New Years, but we’re getting there.”
This small piece of news from Matt Reeves was enough to get fans’ senses tingling. Matt Reeves has confirmed that The Penguin takes place not long after The Batman. And given the first film ended with a massive flood, the sequel taking place in the winter could mean that Gotham will be covered in ice during the next film, potentially teasing an appearance from the iconic Mr. Freeze.
Is ‘The Batman’ Getting A Trilogy?
Yet Matt Reeves doesn’t just want to stop at a sequel. The Penguin was a test to see if The Batman universe had legs to stand on its own. And with another spin-off series now confirmed to be in development, the director hasn’t been shy about his hopes for the film franchise, revealing that he always had plans to make the project a trilogy.
“Yes, that is still the plan,” Reeves answered when asked if the franchise would make it to becoming a trilogy. “I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.”
Many fans believe that the trilogy being set up for The Batman universe is meant to serve as a crime and corruption saga for the Caped Crusader. Given The Penguin and the cancelled GCPD series both included those themes, and early rumors about the sequel confirm the same, the most popular theory is that director Matt Reeves is setting up the trilogy to culminate in a showdown against the Court of Owls. Though given how long these projects take to come out, Batman Beyond may be the one to take them down!
The Penguin is set to drop on HBO on September 19th, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
