Is The Penguin a worthy addition to The Batman universe? The first reviews paint an interesting picture as the series cements a score on Rotten Tomatoes.

After two long years, The Batman universe is officially set to continue this week with the release of The Penguin. Fans have been keeping their eyes locked on the internet as early reviews have begun to squeak out, many of which paint the picture of an engaging but flawed edition to DC’s beloved Elseworlds story from the mind of Matt Reeves. However, the ‘make it or break it’ moment in the eyes of general audiences often comes from the series’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Luckily, it seems the aggregator has been just as kind as the early reviews. While the audience score is still left blank as the first episodes of The Penguin don’t drop on Max for another three days, DC gave out enough of The Batman spin-off to critics to ensure that a solid opinion was reached. This culminated in an astounding 93% score for the series on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Future Of The Batman Series

The Penguin has been touted as the next step in The Batman universe. While DC fans were disappointed by the news that their favorite Caped Crusader wouldn’t be dropping in to make a cameo in the series, Matt Reeves’ has confirmed that the events of the project will have an impact on the upcoming sequel, suggesting the franchise might be staying a lot more grounded than people may have expected thanks to early rumors.

However, The Penguin isn’t the only spin-off of The Batman in development. Matt Reeves has confirmed at least one more series is being made in collaboration with DC Studios. While it hasn’t been confirmed exactly what the show would revolve around, some speculation has pointed the finger at two main candidates: Two-Face or Clayface. Given how good the Rotten Tomatoes reviews for this show were, it’s entirely possible both ideas get greenlit!

The Penguin is set to drop on HBO on September 19th, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe and make sure to stay tuned to our YouTube channel for more content.
