With the writer’s strike finally coming to an end on Wednesday morning, DC Studios Chief James Gunn took to social media to answer some fan questions about the DCU, confirming once again the three DCEU characters who will pivot the DCU.

“Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller, and John Cena will Peacemaker,” Gunn said on Threads.

Gunn also once again hinted at the DCU starting with Superman: Legacy, featuring David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, with Gunn directing. However, the first project on the slate is the highly-anticipated animated series, Creature Commandos.

“Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year — a sort of aperitif to the DCU — & then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that,” Gunn said. “It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think its okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.”

Gunn added, “And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories & some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows & animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.”

Creature Commandos, the inaugural installment in Gunn and Safran’s highly anticipated Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters saga within the DC Universe (DCU). Viola Davis returns as Amanda Waller in the animated Max series, slated for a 2024 release, alongside actors Frank Grillo, Maria Bakalova, and David Harbour.

Davis is also set to lead the live-action Max series Waller, a prominent addition to the lineup of film and television titles planned for this opening chapter.

Don’t expect Peacemaker season 2 before July 2025

The frustration stemming from the extended waiting period is evident, as numerous Peacemaker fans have turned to social media to vocalize their discontent, with a few even raising questions about the rationale behind a second season following such a lengthy hiatus.

John Cena’s rendition of the DC Comics character has played a significant role in propelling Peacemaker to fan-favorite status. The show has garnered acclaim for its distinctive fusion of action, humor, and drama.

Created by the writing duo Joe Gill and artist Pat Boyette, Peacemaker made his debut as a member of Task Force X, a government-assembled squad of supervillains dispatched on perilous missions. The character is notable for his unwavering commitment to achieving peace, even if it necessitates the use of force. The series continues the story immediately following the events of The Suicide Squad.

Peacemaker is also currently starring in a his own comic book titled Peacemaker Tries Hard! from DC Comics.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists earlier this year that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects.
