Viola Davis is set to reprise her role as Amanda Waller in a new series set in the DC Universe.

The Amanda Waller series was announced during the DC Universe presentation at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, with DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran revealing that Academy Award winner Viola Davis is returning to her role as the leader of Task Force X. Davis made her debut as Waller in the two Suicide Squad movies and later played the DC Comics character in the HBO Max series Peacemaker and the post-credits scene of Black Adam.

Waller is being written by Christal Henry (Watchmen) and Jeremy Carver (Doom Patrol) and features characters from the Peacemaker series starring John Cena. It’s being released before the second season of Peacemaker as James Gunn is busy working on his Superman movie and the animated series Creature Commandos.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, teleivsion, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
