HBO Max announced another season of Peacemaker is on the way, with James Gunn taking on a more prominent role.
Peacemaker has been a surefire hit for HBO Max, but the steamer didn’t confirm a season two until now. James Gunn recently revealed he felt pretty confident another season would happen, and now HBO Max has made it official. Here’s what HBO Max Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey said about the renewal:
“The brilliance of James Gunn once again shines with Peacemaker. He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that’s simultaneously thrilling, hilarious and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world. As the first original DC show to have its series premiere on HBO Max, we are thrilled that the viewers agreed to give peace a f***ing chance.”
James Gunn had a pretty big hand in the first season of Peacemaker, but he will have an even bigger role next season, writing and directing every episode. Gunn shared his excitement for what’s next after the confirmation of a season two:
“Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max. To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!”
Peacemaker season two will also mark the return of John Cena as the titular character who debuted in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Cena was gracious in his response to getting a chance to play the character again in another season of the HBO Max series:
“I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character. Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series.”
Here is the synopsis for the HBO Max original series:
PEACEMAKER explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it!
The series was created by James Gunn, who wrote all the episodes and directed five of them. The first season of the HBO Max series will consist of eight episodes, with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill, and Rosemary Rodriguez also directing episodes. Clint Mansell and Kevin Kiner also composed the DC show’s score.
The HBO Max series stars John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick.
