James Gunn Reveals How He’ll Handle Batman And Superman’s Origins In The DC Universe

Will Batman have an origin story?

Are Batman and Superman getting revamped origins in the DC Universe? James Gunn reveals how he’ll handle those tales as old as time in his reboot.

Origin stories have been a topic of debate over the past few years. Many see them as archaic remnants of a time where comic books weren’t mainstream that limit the stories creators are able to tell. Others see them as core to the identities of characters like Batman and Superman as their costumes and villains. All eyes have been on James Gunn to see which side he’ll land on going into the upcoming reboot of the DC Universe.

James Gunn has an interesting answer to the conundrum. Speaking in a recent post on Threads, the writer and director revealed that he’ll be skipping over the origins of Batman and Superman in the new DC Universe due to them being nearly universally understood by audiences. However, he isn’t against telling origin stories in principle for other characters.

“I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them…” Gunn wrote before following up in a separate post. “Again, it’s just two DC characters: Batman and Superman. And it is definitely for everyone.”

Batman And Superman’s Starting Point In The DC Universe

While James Gunn won’t be adapting the origins of Batman and Superman in the DC Universe, that doesn’t mean he’ll be chucking fans into the middle of their stories. His upcoming Superman reboot is set to focus on Clark coming into his own as the Man of Steel, reconciling his kryptonian heritage with the home he’s grown on Earth at the Daily Planet and in Smallville.

In contrast to how James Gunn is handling Superman, Batman will be tackling a whole new life in his film. The Caped Crusader’s debut project in the DC Universe will be an adaptation of Batman and Son, which follows Bruce Wayne’s journey into fatherhood as his son Damian Wayne arrives at his doorstep to be his new Robin after years of being raised by the villainous Talia Al Ghul.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
