Is DC Studios already in trouble? James Gunn gives a worrying update about the initial slate of films announced for the upcoming reboot.
The day that James Gunn announced the initial slate for DC Studios might as well have been Christmas for the fandom. A dozen projects ranging from well-known favorites to hidden gems were announced for the reboot. Though as the years have gone on, many fans have started to worry that some of the projects announced in the inaugural video might have gotten cancelled.
James Gunn took to social media to try to quell the firestorm. In a post on Threads, the DC Studios co-chair assured fans that everything announced from their initial slate was in development. This is different from the projects being in production, as it means scripts are still being written and nothing has officially been greenlit by the studio.
James Gunn Clarifies His DC Studios Statements
Some fans took this further than James Gunn may have liked, using his statement to say that every project announced in DC Studios’ initial slate was certain to hit the small and silver screens sooner or later. Gunn set the record straight in a separate post, clarifying that none of those projects are safe from being cancelled, simply that they’re actively being worked on.
“Just to clarify, I said everything we originally announced was still in development not that it’s still coming. That all depends on the scripts! We’ll never put a half-assed script in production just because it was announced.”
While this may be disappointing to some fans, pushing projects out the door just so they could fit the plan for the larger universe is exactly what the internet has criticized Marvel Studios for in the past. It’s good that DC Studios is only greenlighting projects that they view as being ready to enter production, even if that means James Gunn may end up disappointing fans with his initial slate.
