The Summer of Superman is here! James Gunn helps promote the Man of Steel’s DC renaissance by sharing gorgeous new artwork of the hero.
Fans are finally in the eve of the Summer of Superman. Coined by James Gunn himself, the event is meant to be a period to celebrate DC’s Big Blue Boyscout before his grand return to the silver screen in July. It’s also meant to build some much-needed momentum for the film, which has an uphill battle to prove its worth as the first entry in a controversial reboot for an already controversial franchise.
Much like the Man of Steel himself, the Summer of Superman is starting in the comics. To kick off the season, James Gunn revealed the cover of the upcoming comic special titled DC’s Summer of Superman Special #1, which follows the wedding of Lana Lang and John Henry Irons, and all the trials and tribulations that come with friends of Superman getting married. The cover, illustrated by Jorge Jiménez, can be seen in full below.
A fantastic way to celebrate the Summer of @Superman.
Many thanks to @DanSlott, Mark Waid and @Williamson_Josh and artist @JorgeJimenezArt for lending their talents to this project. Summer of Superman Special #1 drops April 16! pic.twitter.com/tF0iO8kejq— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) January 22, 2025
The Summer Of Superman Is Here!
This isn’t the only comic DC is releasing to help promote James Gunn’s upcoming reboot. Joining DC’s Summer of Superman Special #1 are a number of books celebrating the past and future of the Last Son of Krypton. This includes Superman: The World which brings the character on a globe-trotting adventure, Superman’s Good Guy Gang to kick off DC’s new young readers initiative, and the return of Lex Luthor in Oversize Superman #25.
It’s likely James Gunn has plans outside of the comics to help promote the Summer of Superman. It’s likely DC will release a sneak-peek at season 3 of My Adventures With Superman, and have a large event as Harley Quinn makes her way to Metropolis in the newest season of her animated show. Game tie-ins are also to be expected, with costumes of the Man of Steel likely headed to popular games like Fortnite and Multiversus.
Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
