Superman is a part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios plans.
This past weekend, James Gunn took to his official Twitter page to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the Richard Donner-directed Superman movie starring Christopher Reeve. During an impropmptu Q&A session that took place in the comments of his post on the platform, Gunn was asked if his DC Universe plans include a Superman. The filmmaker replied , “Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority.”
Henry Cavill reprised the role of Superman for the post-credits scene of Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. However, Cavill’s Superman future is in doubt as James Gunn and Peter Safran continue mapping out the next few years of the DC Universe. The two are expected to present their plans to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav sometime this week.
A recent report revealed that Henry Cavill has also shot a Superman cameo for The Flash, but the scene could end up on the cutting room floor. Cavill hasn’t signed a formal deal for his Superman return and Warner Bros. recently rejected a Man of Steel sequel pitch from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.
A new era for the DC Universe
James Gunn is said to be focusing on the creative direction of the DC Universe, with Peter Safran working on business and production. The two report directly to Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav. Whether their plans involve a Superman movie starring Henry Cavill remains to be seen.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom are currently in various stages of post-production at Warner Bros. Discovery, with all four DC Universe movies slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
