‘Superman’ Director James Gunn Confims The Identity Of The Movie’s Main Villain

A villain in plain sight!

Was the main villain of Superman hiding in plain sight this whole time? James Gunn officially confirms who the DC film’s antagonist will be.

A new strain of Superman rumors has been making its way around the internet. This time the rumor claims that David Corenswet will himself be the villain of the film, playing an evil clone of the Man of Steel created by Lex Luthor.

In response, James Gunn did what James Gunn does best: debunk rumors on social media. While he declined to state what specific rumor he was referring to, the director did confirm that Lex Luthor would be the main villain of Superman, and that fans should only trust news if it comes from his mouth.

“The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman.” Gunn wrote on Threads. “The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor. I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from that it’s something other than this.”

“There are so many stories coming out every day it’s difficult to deal with and everytime I strike something down I’m giving it attention. So, I’ll say again, don’t believe anything unless you see it HERE (& why would you want to know everything before the movie comes out anyway?)”

The Hidden Meaning Of James Gunn’s Response

Perhaps it’s a bit conspiratorial to look into James Gunn’s words about being too quick to believe rumors with a closer lens. However, Gunn never directly said that an evil Superman clone WOULDN’T appear in the film. So while Lex Luthor will be the main antagonist, it’s possible the rumors remain true with the clone being a secondary antagonist.

Of course, it’s possible that the scoopers are wrong on this one. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time. But without knowing what twists may be in store for Superman until the project releases, the most important thing to take away from James Gunn’s message is that sometimes it may be best to not know every detail.

Superman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
