Is The Batman franchise dead in the water? DC Universe co-chair James Gunn commented on the rumor that the film’s sequel has been cancelled.
Fans of The Batman have had a rough few years. The original film came out in 2022 to rave reviews, quickly leading to a sequel being confirmed along with two spin-offs: The Penguin and a series based around the GCPD. However, while The Penguin is set to release on Max this fall, the GCPD series has ultimately been scrapped and replaced by a series focused on Arkham Asylum set in James Gunn’s DC Universe.
This has led many to wonder if The Batman will end up being cancelled, given James Gunn’s hopes to unify the DC Universe. These fears came to a head recently when a rumor began to circulate that both the sequel and planned trilogy had been scrapped amidst the project’s delay into 2026.
James Gunn Speaks On The Batman Rumors
Fans’ first response, as with most things concerning the DC Universe, was to annoy James Gunn on social media to see if he would confirm or deny this rumor. Luckily, it seems The Batman universe is safe for now, with Gunn saying “Of course not” to an Instagram comment asking if the sequel had been cancelled.
Of course, this doesn’t mean the franchise is safe forever. James Gunn is building his own Batman franchise in the DC Universe. It’s possible that The Batman only gets a single sequel instead of an entire trilogy. However, fans can at least rest assured for now that the project isn’t cancelled quite yet.
