The Suicide Squad director James Gunn revealed whether he’d like to see the DC film released straight to video-on-demand instead of a theatrical debut.

James Gunn recently told fans on Instagram whether he would consider releasing The Suicide Squad or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 straight to VOD if he was in charge of that decision. The director often answers questions from fans on his Instagram page, most recently opening up about a Rocket and Groot spin-off movie as well as discussing the time he introduced Tom Holland to Stan Lee. But since the pandemic caused recent titles like Trolls World Tour and Artemis Fowl to debut on streaming services instead of a theatrical release, fans are wondering whether it might change the way studios release their upcoming movies.

When asked if he’d choose to release The Suicide Squad on VOD, James Gunn explained that he’d only use streaming as a last resort: “Only if that was the only way they could be seen”. Because The Suicide Squad isn’t due to arrive until August 6 2021, hopefully the pandemic will have subsided by that time and theaters will be open as normal so the villains can get the theatrical release they deserve.

What do you think about movies heading straight to VOD? Do you think James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad should debut on a streaming service like HBO Max? Sound-off in the comments below!

The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jared Leto as The Joker. However, James Gunn is expected to deliver on the fresh take on the Suicide Squad in his upcoming movie.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.

The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on DC films as it develops and you can also subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content in the future!
