Writer and director James Gunn has responded to the review bombing of his latest film The Suicide Squad.

One of the most common ways of changing a film’s public perception for the worse is to review bomb it on sites that allow user ratings. It’s a common tactic employed by internet trolls to discredit projects that they don’t like in the hopes that people take the negative reviews without a grain of salt. It has been employed time and time again, with one of the most infamous instances being when The Last of Us 2 was bombarded by willfully ignorant and negative fan reviews after the creative team made a number of controversial decisions. To a certain degree, the same treatment is being hurled towards James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which acts as a reboot of sorts from the original film that debuted in 2016.

In responding to a fan’s tweet, James Gunn stated that he’s indifferent towards the review bombing. He also made it clear that he doesn’t feel any ill will towards so-called Snyder Cut fans, who have been labeled numerous times by outlets and critics as toxic and malevolent. Overall, Gunn seems to have a solid attitude towards the negative but ultimately fruitless tactic of review bombing.

As for how the film has been received by critics? They love it. Currently, the film boasts a whopping 96% on Rotten Tomatoes with the coveted Certified Fresh seal of approval. We loved the filming, giving it a rare 10/10 perfect score, calling it “a masterfully-directed wild ride… like Guardians of the Galaxy on LSD.”

Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s upcoming film:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
