James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy’ Gets Update Amid Writers Strike

Is Superman safe?

James Gunn Superman Legacy

Superman: Legacy is the highly-anticipated start to the new DC Universe, though many fans worry that the film may miss its 2025 release date due to the recently-announced writers strike. Luckily for fans, a new report reveals that James Gunn submitted the first draft of the script right before the strike shut down Hollywood.

The news of the first draft of the script for Superman: Legacy being submitted was recently dropped by TheWrap. According to the trade, James Gunn handed the script to Warner Bros. last week. The script being in the hands of the studio is good news for pre-production work, as even a draft allows casting, costuming and set design to start in full-swing. However, even with the script being in before the strike, Gunn is now forbidden by the WGA from working on rewrites for it for the remainder of the strike. While the strike may be over before the studio even finishes reading the script, the possibility of a longer one may mean that the film’s early submission didn’t save it from delays.

Superman: Legacy likely won’t be the only DC Studios project affected by the writer’s strike. Tom King, who wrote the comic that will be used as the basis for the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film, recently confirmed that he stopped working on a dream project of his because of the strike, which may very well be that film. As James Gunn has said that DC Studios will have a commitment to their storytellers going forward, it’s only fitting that the only thing to stop the production of new projects is those very same storytellers demanding fair pay for their work.

Superman’s DC Universe Future

Superman: Legacy is a much-anticipated project, given that Clark Kent has been an integral part of the DC Universe for over 80 years, with various iterations and adaptations across different media. The movie promises to explore the character’s origins and his struggles to balance his dual identities as Clark and Superman while fighting off villains and saving the world. The choice to focus on the early years of his career is a bold move that could potentially breathe new life into the character and appeal to a younger generation of fans.

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room and a unified storyline across film, television, animation and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
