Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom marks the end of the DCEU, but it seems Jason Momoa’s time as Arthur Curry may not be up after all.
In many ways, Jason Momoa has become the face of the DCEU, starring in one of its most successful movies and being the only hero who got two solo films (that both hit theaters). With the universe coming to an end, Momoa spoke on this project being the perfect end to his journey, along with teasing a potential return as the Defender of the Deep:
“I think it’s a really great movie that sums it all up,” Momoa revealed in a recent interview with ETalk. “You get to see where he’s at, and it’s a pretty cool journey. It’s been 12 years, and the DCEU is at its end. I think this is one of those movies that you want to see it all get tied up, and I think it’s a really good way to finish it all.”
“Unless…unless. I mean, listen. It is a big universe, and who knows? The cool thing is, it’s up to the fans. But we did a great job, I think the fans will be very excited, very proud. I’m extremely proud of it.”
Given James Gunn seems set to recasting every DCEU Justice League member for his new DC Universe, it’s not likely Jason Momoa will return to the role after Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. However, crazier things have happened. With The Batman able to coexist alongside the DC Universe, who says fans can’t have two Aquamen? Besides Gunn, of course.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
