JK Simmons On Commissioner Gordon’s Relationship With Barbara In ‘Batgirl’

Batgirl will mark the first time we see the relationship in live-action!

JK Simmons recently talked about his dynamic as Commissioner Gordon with Leslie Grace’s Barbara Gordon in the upcoming Batgirl film.

While The Batman will introduce a new James Gordon with Jeffrey Wright, Batgirl will bring back JK Simmons, who first played the character in Justice League. Recent set photos have revealed flashback scenes of Simmons’ Gordon with a young Barbara, and another saw him fighting side by side with Michael Keaton’s Batman.

Batgirl will mark the first time we will see the relationship of Commissioner Gordon and Barabra Gordon play out in live-action since Alicia Silverstone’s version was a member of the Pennyworth family in Batman & Robin. In the comics, one weird detail is that James Gordon’s wife shares the same name as his daughter. During an interview with Deadline, JK Simmons shared that this will be addressed in the Batgirl film, with his Gordon having a nickname for Leslie Grace’s Barbara:

“Commissioner Gordon, formerly Detective Gordon, is the father of Barbara Gordon; well, also the husband of Barbara Gordon, gets a little confusing. We call the younger one ‘Babs’ or ‘Bugs’, and she becomes Batgirl. I hope that wasn’t a spoiler, my seat didn’t get electrified so I guess I’m allowed to say that.”

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are directing Batgirl, which is being planned as a movie for the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. The two most recently directed the 2020 box office hit Bad Boys for Life and episodes of the upcoming Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel. Christina Hodson, the screenwriter behind Birds of Prey and The Flash, penned the script.

DC’s Batgirl movie is set to follow the Barbara Gordon iteration of the Gotham City heroine. JK Simmons also stars as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser will appear as the villain Firefly, and Michael Keaton is returning as his version of Batman.

Batgirl will hit HBO Max sometime this year. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news on JK Simmons’ Commissioner Gordon in Batgirl, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
