The budget for Joaquin Phoenix’s upcoming film, Joker: Folie À Deux has been revealed and it’s significantly higher than the previous film’s.
Back in 2019, Joker hit theaters and became a massive hit. With a budget reported to be around $55M, the film went on to become the most profitable DC film ever after earning over $1B at the worldwide box office. A sequel was expected to follow but Warner Bros dragged its feet about making any kind of announcement until just recently.
Earlier this summer, the title for the sequel, Joker: Folie À Deux, was revealed. The first teaser for the film also confirmed that Lady Gaga would be involved in the movie, though it’s not clear who she will be playing. Now we know roughly how much the upcoming film will cost.
The Budget Is Revealed
A recent report from Variety broke down how much Joker: Folie À Deux would cost. It had already been reported that both Joaquin Phoenix had received a massive pay raise and will make $20M for the upcoming film. The new report also indicates that director Todd Philips is also getting a similar salary. Newcomer Lady Gaga will also be getting $10M for her role in the upcoming movie. This, coupled with the production costs of the film, will bring it to approximately $150M, costing nearly three times as much as the first film.
Here is the official synopsis for Joker:
Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital, while Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
