Todd Phillips has revealed the working title for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker sequel.
Back in 2019, Joaquin Phoneix’s Joker was released in theaters. While the film was not without its detractors it went on to earn over $1B at the worldwide box office making it the most profitable DC film of all time. The film would also be nominated for 11 Acadamy Awards and would go on to win 2 for Best Actor in a Lead Role for Phoenix and Original Score for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. This did, however, beg the question of whether or not there would be any follow-up to the film.
Since Joker was released, we’ve seen two different live-action versions of the character appear on the screen. Jared Leto returned to the role for Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League with another version appearing in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman played by Barry Keoghan. This does beg the question as to whether or not there was even any place for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in the DC Extended Universe space. Now it appears that Warner Bros and Discovery Media are making room.
Earlier this year, an exclusive Heroic Hollywood report revealed that the next Joaquin Phoenix Joker film was going to begin production sometime next year. More recent reports suggested that Todd Phillips was getting closer to a sequel. Now, at long last, we have our first official word on the sequel.
The New Joker Title Revealed
Earlier today, Todd Phillips revealed a copy of the script of the new film on his Instagram page with Joaquin Phonix reading it. It also revealed the working title of the upcoming film which is Joker: Folie à Deux. Further details were not included and you can see the full post on Phillips’ Instagram page.
Here is the official synopsis for Joker:
Director Todd Phillips’ “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the planned second film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
