Peacemaker star John Cena expressed gratitude for the Season Finale’s DCEU cameos.
Earlier this week, the first Season Finale for HBO Max’s DC Extended Universe (DCEU) series Peacemaker dropped. The series, which stars John Cena in the titular role has had some interesting ties to the broader DCEU akin to how Shazam! referenced numerous characters, albeit, the former is an adult-oriented comic book series while the latter is a more family-friendly superhero film. However, the Season Finale had perhaps the most shocking ties to the broader DCEU.
WARNING: The DCEU Cameos in Peacemaker’s Season Finale Are Discussed Below.
The DCEU series culminates in an epic climax with the Butterflies and the Cow. Following its aftermath, we see Peacemaker and his team walk away as four members of the Justice League appear a bit too late, including Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman and The Flash. Although the likenesses of Superman and Wonder Woman remain in the shadows, we do see Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller share a humorous exchange regarding the prominent conspiracy theory that’s pervaded the internet in the DCEU: that Aquaman gets his way with fish.
In an interview with Fandom, John Cena expressed his gratitude to Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller for contributing their cameos to the DCEU series:
“I’m forever grateful [to Momoa and Miller], because they did us a huge solid by doing that. And they were able to put themselves in the limelight and get everybody talking, but they do so in a way where the joke’s not on them. And they did it for the good of our show. Whether that was their intention or not, it really, really, really, really helped us, especially after eight episodes of people being excited about the show, to put a stamp on it. It lets everybody know that there’s a new player in the DC Universe and that this is what’s going on. ‘These folks are now on an equal playing field, wow!’ That’s my takeaway from that. I think that was a very important moment for us. And of course, it gives everybody a whole lot of stuff to talk about and James Gunn is really good about making people talk about stuff! So mission accomplished in that regard.”
With John Cena and series creator James Gunn set to return for a second season, it would be interesting to see if there will be more exciting DCEU cameos. After all, if two headlining stars like Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller were able to make an appearance, given the success of Peacemaker on HBO Max, who knows who else in the DCEU would want to appear now?
Here is the synopsis for John Cena’s DCEU series Peacemaker:
PEACEMAKER explores the continuing story of the character that John Cena reprises in the aftermath of executive producer James Gunn’s 2021 film The Suicide Squad – a compellingly vainglorious man who believes in peace at any cost, no matter how many people he has to kill to get it!
The series was created by James Gunn, who wrote all the episodes and directed five of them. The first season of the HBO Max series will consist of eight episodes, with Brad Anderson, Jody Hill, and Rosemary Rodriguez also directing episodes. Clint Mansell and Kevin Kiner also composed the DCEU show’s score.
The HBO Max DCEU series stars John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Chukwudi Iwuji, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick.
