Could Lady Gaga be the perfect Harley Quinn? The casting director Joker: Folie à Deux reveals her surprise at how good the singer’s performance was in the upcoming sequel.
Fans were shocked when it was announced that Lady Gaga would be joining the cast of Joker: Folie à Deux as Harley Quinn. They were even more shocked when the first trailer dropped and she actually looked pretty dang amazing as the Clown Princess of Crime. It seems even Francine Maisler, the casting director for the film, didn’t realize how good she’d turn out to be!
“She’s so good in it, you guys,” Maisler told Deadline in a recent interview. “She’s going to blow your mind. I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was Todd Phillips, before me. But I will tell you, she’s really surprising – and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised.”
“I mean, we all knew what she could do in A Star is Born, but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real. But this…Man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real – and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is – shows she’s good.”
In a world where big names get attached to projects simply by their brand recognition, it’s a relief to hear that Lady Gaga truly earned her stripes as Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. Joaquin Phoenix is a tour de force himself, so being able to keep up in a role he’s already perfected is truly praise for the history books.
The Musical World Of Joker: Folie à Deux
There’s a reason Lady Gaga specifically was sought out by Todd Phillips for the role of Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. While the director insists that it isn’t a musical, the project is set to feature at least fifteen songs.
Joker: Folie à Deux seems to be reinventing everything about the franchise in the sequel. Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn won’t even be named Harley Quinn! In a recent interview, the pop star explained that her character will actually go by “Lee” throughout most of the film. This might suggest that more changes are to come for the iconic character once the film finally drops!
Joker: Folie à Deux is set to hit theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the sequel and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
