Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy won’t be announcing any new Star Wars movies at D23, as she is reportedly not yet prepared to greenlight any of the Star Wars films currently in development.
D23, Disney’s own fan exposition event, is underway and fans will be eagerly awaiting Disney, Marvel and Star Wars news over the course of the weekend. However, new reports confirm it is unlikely there will be any updates on any upcoming Star Wars film projects.
While Star Wars is continuing to dominate streaming, with series such as Andor and the second season of The Bad Batch in the pipeline, Kathleen Kennedy is apparently not ready to launch another movie any time soon.
Star Wars‘ Big Screen Future
According to Puck News, the only Star Wars announcements coming at D23 will be for upcoming Disney Plus series, as Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy is not yet ready to put another film project for the franchise into production.
The last Star Wars film to hit the big screen was 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which was poorly received by fans of the franchise. It’s possible the response to this film has led to Kennedy holding off on another film release.
The report from Puck News’ Matt Belloni also posits poor responses to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi and Patty Jenkins’ DC film Wonder Woman 1984 may have motivated her to hold off on greenlighting Johnson’s planned Star Wars trilogy and Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron.
Consequently, no new Star Wars movies are expected to be released before 2024. This will mean a minimum gap of 5 years between The Rise of Skywalker and the next Star Wars instalment to hit the big screen.
Whatever the reason behind the decision, Star Wars is continuing to perform well on Disney Plus. The hotly anticipated Rogue One prequel series Andor is due to arrive later this month, with Season 2 of the animated The Bad Batch also on the way, ahead of a third season for the immensely popular live-action series The Mandalorian from Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.
Here is the synopsis for Lucasfilm’s next Star Wars series hitting Disney Plus, Andor:
“The ‘Andor’ series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”
Andor stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Reilly. Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy, Stephen Schiff, and Beau Willimon served as the writers of the Star Wars series while Toby Haynes, Susanna White, and Benjamin Caron directed the episodes.
Andor will premiere Disney Plus on September 21, 2022, with three episodes. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the Star Wars franchise, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more great video content!
