One of the stars of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels recently spoke about the possibility of bringing his beloved animated character into live action.
Recent Disney Plus Star Wars series The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi have all brought various characters from the animated Clone Wars and Rebels series into live action for the first time. Now, another star of the animated series is hoping to make the jump to live action.
Fans have generally responded well to seeing animated characters brought into the recent live-action Star Wars series and this latest candidate could also prove a popular choice.
Jim Cummings Returns To Star Wars?
Jim Cummings has said he is eager to bring his space-faring pirate Hondo Ohnaka into one of Disney Plus’ live-action Star Wars series, naming Ahsoka his top pick.
Hondo was first introduced in Season 2 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, going on to appear several more times throughout the series and later returning in Star Wars Rebels. While the character started as more of a straightforward villain, his more sympathetic side gradually started to show through and he became one of the fanbase’s favorite comedic characters.
Speaking about whether he would return to Star Wars for a live-action appearance, Jim Cummings said “Probably, yes and yes, but they haven’t talked to me about it. I don’t know why, I mean… yeah. I’m there. I ain’t goin’ nowhere.”
Asked which Star Wars character he would most want to meet in live action, Cummings adopted Hondo’s voice to respond “it definitely would be Ahsoka; the poor kid misses me. I can’t deny her of me!” He went on to joke “can you believe he didn’t put me in [The Mandalorian]? Whatever. My girlfriend was in it! That’s where I’m p****d!”
Jim Cummings then went on to praise Dave Filoni, who has been an executive producer on Clone Wars, Rebels, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett:
“He’s a great, great guy and he’s a fantastic director too, and by that I mean he kept all my ad-libs. No, but he was great. It was just a lot of fun. And you know, he lets it be organic. He lets us go for pages at a time. And he’d let us go for four or five pages at a time, so you really got the flow and I think it shows in the performances.”
Given the positive fan reaction to Hondo Ohnaka, it seems likely he could crop up in a live-action Star Wars series some time soon. Other characters to have made the transition from animation to live action in Star Wars include Cad Bane, the Grand Inquisitor, Bo-Katan Kryze and Ahsoka Tano.
The next Star Wars project from Lucasfilm will be Andor on Disney Plus. Here’s the synopsis:
“The ‘Andor’ series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero.”
Andor stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, and Genevieve O’Reilly. Tony Gilroy, Dan Gilroy, Stephen Schiff, and Beau Willimon served as the writers of the Star Wars series while Toby Haynes, Susanna White, and Benjamin Caron directed the episodes.
