Is Constantine finally getting a sequel? Keanu Reeves gives fans some hope with the latest update on the long-awaited DC Universe project.
The story of Keanu Reeves’ Constantine sequel is one of the most odd and winding journeys in the DC Universe pantheon. The original film came out in 2005 to mediocre reviews and a rather hefty box office. Though, despite making money and Reeves being a rising star off The Matrix trilogy, talks for a sequel wouldn’t even begin to surface until 2011.
Even then, there was no movement on a sequel until 2022, where it was revealed that Warner Bros. was interested in developing a sequel to Constantine. Keanu Reeves himself was also confirmed to return to the leading role. While waters on the production got murky as James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the DC Universe, Reeves himself confirmed that the project was still in development as an Elseworlds story.
Is The Constantine Sequel Ever Coming Out?
Yet despite repeated assurances from Keanu Reeves, most recently in February of this year, there has been no actual headway made on a Constantine sequel. This has led many to assume that, in spite of what Reeves has been saying, the project is already cancelled. Yet in a recent interview with Fandango, the actor revealed he still has hope for the film to come to life.
“Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too.”
Given how open James Gunn has been about wanting Elseworlds projects for the DC Universe, it truthfully wouldn’t be shocking to see a Constantine sequel come to light. This not even to mention that Keanu Reeves is bigger than ever- so a superhero film starring him would certainly turn at least a small profit.
