It is being reported that Mahershala Ali’s Blade is in trouble, with script issues plaguing the project as Marvel chief Kevin Feige finds himself spread too thin amidst the studio’s growing output.
Anyone who saw the Phase 5 and 6 slates Marvel Studios unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con this year knows Kevin Feige has a lot on his plate right now. Between Disney Plus and theatrical releases, Marvel is looking to release eight or nine projects a year in 2023 and 2024.
The studio’s new strategy is obviously a far cry from the two or three annual MCU releases audiences were used to seeing during the Infinity Saga. It’s not surprising to hear that the sudden increase in output might be creating new pressures, potentially impacting projects such as Blade.
Is Blade In Trouble At Marvel Studios?
The Ankler’s Jeff Sneider has reported inside sources at Marvel are claiming Mahershala Ali is frustrated with the production process on Blade, while Kevin Feige may be struggling to keep on top of Marvel Studios’ gargantuan workload.
Blade is said to currently have a script of just 90 pages in length and features only two action sequences, which sources have described as “lackluster.” If accurate, it sounds like Marvel’s increasingly divided focus on a growing range of projects is taking its toll on the films.
Sneider revealed via Twitter:
“I’m told that the current BLADE script is roughly 90 pages and features exactly TWO (lackluster) action sequences. Mahershala said to be very frustrated with the process. Feige said to be spread too thin. But hey, that’s just what sources are telling me. Don’t shoot the messenger”
Of course, it’s difficult to verify insider reports such as this and even if problems are arising in the production of Blade, a number of factors could be contributing to the situation, so it’s best to take reports such as this with a pinch of salt. However, it certainly wouldn’t be surprising to hear Marvel’s starting to feel the strain of bringing so many projects into production at once.
Mahershala Ali’s Blade last appeared in Marvel’s Eternals. Here’s the synopsis:
The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.
Chloé Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Eternals is available to own on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD and also to stream on Disney Plus. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the MCU, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
