Ms. Marvel ended with a shocking reveal, ushering mutants into the MCU, and director Adil El Arbi has shared the one request Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had for that moment.
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE MS. MARVEL FINALE FOLLOW!
In the final moments of Ms. Marvel‘s sixth episode, Matt Lintz’s Bruno talks to Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan about the true origins of powers, suggesting she was only able to wield her abilities because of a difference in her genes – a mutation.
The reveal comes with a retro musical sting, taken from the theme tune to the 1990s X-Men animated series, driving home the fact that the MCU’s Ms. Marvel is a mutant.
Kevin Feige’s MCU ‘X-Men’ Tease
Ms. Marvel marks the second time the ’90s X-Men theme has been used in the MCU. While this is the first time it is used in a scene in the MCU’s main universe, the theme was also briefly featured in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to signal the arrival of Earth-838’s Professor X.
According to Ms. Marvel director Adil El Arbi, the inclusion of that particular X-Men theme was requested by Kevin Feige directly. In true, secretive Marvel fashion, Feige did not reveal details of the studio’s plans for the MCU’s X-Men, or mutants in general, to the Ms. Marvel showrunners.
Revealing that the scene was a last-minute addition, shot and scored as per Kevin Feige’s request, Adil El Arbi told The Wrap:
“Well, to begin with, it was the last thing we read. So that was a best-kept secret. Nobody knew about it until we read the last version of the script and all of a sudden it was like, damn. And then we would ask producers about it and we would not get any answers. Then Kevin Feige said: Just shoot this, put the little music on, and that’s it. We can only hope that we be part of the future of Ms. Marvel because it would be super nice to have some X-Men flavor in there.”
Asked about Kevin Feige’s request to include the X-Men theme, El Arbi said “That’s how our introduction of Marvel was, as kids. It’s the X-Men animated show, and also the Spider-Man show. But yeah, it was cool.” While it sounds like Feige is keeping his cards close to his chest, it seems likely MCU fans could be seeing more of the X-Men very soon.
Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel” is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with super powers, right?
The series stars Iman Vellani, Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Matt Lintz, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Fawad Khan, Mehwish Hayat, and Farhan Akhtar. Episodes of the series were directed by Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, with Bisha K. Ali serving as the head writer. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is involved in the series as an executive producer.
