Marvel’s Kevin Feige Had No Interest In Helping On ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’

It wasn't meant to be.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had no interest in helping out on The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

After the disappointing box office returns of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony Pictures was still considering their options in how to continue the franchise. Although The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was in development with Marc Webb returning to direct and Andrew Garfield returning as Peter Parker, the project was inevitably cancelled after it was announced that Marvel Studios would collaborate with Sony to produce a new film set in the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It turns out that when Amy Pascal approached Kevin Feige for assistance on The Amazing Spider-Man 3, he revealed that he only had interest in making an entirely different project for Sony that could be implemented into Marvel’s ongoing shared universe. In speaking with The New York Times, the two producers reflected on what put the collaboration into fruition:

Amy Pascal: That is the truth. I called Kevin and said, ‘Help.’ And then he came over to my office for lunch and said, ‘I know how to help you.’ And then I threw a sandwich at him.

Kevin Feige: She said, “I really want you to help on this next movie. We have these great ideas for the next one. It’s amazing stuff.” And I said, “I’m not good at that — giving advice and leaving. The only way I know how to help is if we just make the movie for you.”

Amy Pascal brought up how Kevin Feige pitched the idea of Peter Parker being brought into the MCU, and how Iron Man could create a new suit for him, making it a distinct approach from previous incarnations:

“And then Kevin called me and came over to the house and said, ‘I have an idea. What if Tony Stark makes Peter’s suit?’ And as soon as he said that, I understood the possibilities of what we could do together. To have Iron Man and Spidey in the same world, one rooted more in technological innovation — the new suit — and less in medical experimentation, which is where we were confined before, felt so much more modern. It has taken a lot of work. But just look at the results. Pretty fantastic, right?”

Ultimately The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never came into fruition, and Andrew Garfield passed on the Peter Parker baton to Tom Holland. Fortunately for Andrew Garfield, the Academy Award-nominee’s legacy as the webhead was celebrated in Spider-Man: No Way Home in a big way, thanks to the appearances of Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Lizard (Rhys Ifans)… Either way, it’s understandable why Kevin Feige opted to craft a reboot under the Marvel Studios umbrella rather than commit to helping on The Amazing Spider-Man 3.

Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori, Martin Starr, J.B. Smoove, Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Benedict Wong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, and Jamie Foxx, with Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.
