Does Kit Harington have a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The Eternals star reveals what plans Marvel has for the Black Knight.
Eternals shocked MCU fans with the introduction of Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, who becomes the Black Knight in the comics. Many assumed this was a tease of something greater to come, especially with a post-credits scene showing the Eternals character meeting Blade. However, according to Harington, Marvel doesn’t have any concrete plans for the character.
“I hope that they do something with that character,” Harington admitted to ScreenRant. “I think that character is fascinating and brilliant. And I love his trajectory in the comics. I love the idea of a good guy being turned bad by his superpower. I think that’s brilliant. I’m not sure whether we’ve had a protagonist that’s like that, so I think it’s a really strong idea. I’d love them to [revisit him].”
“I don’t know, though. The honest answer is nothing’s in the works at the moment. If they decide to use the character in something, or as a solo thing, I’d be very excited by it. But I don’t think it’s planned at the moment.”
This certainly makes sense. Eternals didn’t do great at the box office, and it did even worse with critics. Marvel is also in a period of change, with even popular projects like Moon Knight and Shang-Chi lacking sequels. While fans can hope Kit Harington will return as Dane Whitman in the future, it certainly doesn’t look bright for the Black Knight’s chances in the MCU.
Marvel’s Eternals Conundrum
Marvel has been caught between a rock and a hard place with Eternals. The project was set up as a new corner of the MCU packed with megastars like Angelina Jolie, but ultimately failed to resonate with general audiences. This left their future in the universe unclear at a time when Disney is looking to play it safe.
Recent rumors suggest that the Eternals cast and planned sequel will be reworked by Marvel and spread across different projects of the MCU. While this means the studio will be able to keep big actors like Kit Harington around, it doesn’t spell well for their characters getting any solo projects in the near future.
