James Mangold directed Logan, which was meant to serve as a finale for Hugh Jackman’s time as Wolverine. Following the announcement that Jackman is returning to the role in Deadpool 3, Mangold has expressed his support for the actor’s return to the role.
The return of Wolverine in Deadpool 3 is still divisive among fans even months from its announcement. While many fans are thrilled to see Jackman reunite with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool on the big screen, others worry that the return will cheapen the impact of Logan as a final goodbye to the beloved X-Men character. One person not divided on the issue is the film’s director, who spoke on the matter on a recent interview, claiming to be excited at the news:
“I’m thrilled for him to get a chance to play with it again,” James Mangold told ET Online. “Whether one way or another, I knew Logan wouldn’t be the last time we see a Wolverine movie. We had our moment to kind of let that movie play and I’m really moved by how much that picture lives in people’s memories. You can’t put a moratorium on characters.”
Luckily for fans, the events of Deadpool 3 have been promised to not contradict those of Logan, as they take place before the character’s demise in 2029. It’s unclear exactly what road the writers will take with Jackman in the film, though fans have been promised a fresh take on the character that hasn’t been seen in prior films. Only time will tell if this will serve as Jackman’s grand return to the role or a stumbling block that fans wished never happened.
