Loki season 2 is the highly anticipated follow-up to the critically acclaimed Disney Plus show. However, despite being exclusively for streaming, the next MCU series is set to have a higher budget than films like Thor 2: The Dark World.

Budgets for blockbusters have certainly been inflating over the last few years, and it seems as though Loki isn’t an exception. Despite debuting exclusively on Disney Plus later this year, the show’s second season is set to have a higher budget than multiple prior MCU projects including Thor 2: The Dark World, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy with a price tag of $141.3 million according to an article by Forbes, not including post-production costs.

While props, sets, and locations certainly account for a lot of that budget, a large portion of why Loki season 2 sports a higher budget than other MCU projects such as Thor 2: The Dark World is largely up to starpower and scope. With six episodes, the series will be at least double the length of any of the aforementioned films, while also packing star power like Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, and Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan. Though given the recent reception of Disney Plus projects like Secret Invasion, only time will tell if this gamble will pay off.

Who else is attached to Loki season two?

Tom Hiddleston is spearheading the cast of Loki season two as the titular God of Mischief. The cast also includes Owen Wilson, Jonathan Majors, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Tara Strong, Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, Ke Huy Quan and Neil Ellice.

Eric Martin replaced Michael Waldron as the head writer of Loki for its second season. Martin and Waldron also serve as executive producers on the series alongside Tom Hiddleston, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. Benson and Moorhead directed the majority of the episodes for the upcoming season.
