Sydney Sweeney is set to star opposite of Dakota Johnson in the upcoming Madame Web film, yet little was known about what character she would play. A new article officially confirms that she’ll be playing Julia Carpenter, a.k.a. Spider-Woman.
This isn’t the first time that Sydney Sweeney was rumored to play Spider-Woman in the upcoming Madame Web movie. Her role was seemingly confirmed a few months ago when Sweeney was talking to Total Film about the Dakota Johnson-led film, but her role as Julia Carpenter was officially confirmed by Variety during their recent interview, with Sweeney saying she bought every comic featuring the character she could:
“I was freaking out, of course,” Sweeney told Variety. “I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.”
Julia Carpenter is a lesser-known spider-person who debuted in the pages of Secret Wars. She became Spider-Woman following an experiment conducted on her by the Commission on Superhuman Activities, which injected her with a cocktail of spider venom and exotic plants to give her powers similar to Spider-Man. Over the years, she would take on the mantles of Madame Web and Arachne, though it’s unclear which version of the character Sydney Sweeney will be portraying.
Notably, Julia Carpenter became Madame Web during the Grim Hunt storyline where Sasha Kravinoff captured her and the original Madame Web for a ritual to revive her husband Kraven. With Sony’s own Kraven the Hunter film coming out at the end of 2024, it’s possible there may be plans to adapt some version of this storyline in a potential crossover film between the two.
Who else is attached to the Madame Web movie?

The Madame Web movie is expected to explore the origin story of the titular character and her first journey in the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters. Its cast also includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Adam Scott and Zosia Mamet.
