Despite Madame Web having wrapped filming months ago, details about the film have largely been kept a secret from the world wide web. Luckily for fans, it seems as though a recent interview may have accidentally confirmed that Sydney Sweeney will appear as Julia Carpenter in the film, a.k.a. Spider-Woman.
Madame Web has teased a jam-packed cast of Spider-people, as the film has been described by Sydney Sweeney as “a powerhouse of badass females.” The project also stars Isabela Merced and Emma Roberts, with Dakota Johnson leading the cast as the titular Madame Web. While all the actresses have been rumored to play different spider-people from across the multiverse, no roles have been officially been disclosed by Sony. In a recent interview with Total Film, Sweeney seemingly confirmed that she’ll be playing Julia Carpenter.
Julia Carpenter is a lesser-known spider-person who debuted in the pages of Secret Wars. She became Spider-Woman following an experiment conducted on her by the Commission on Superhuman Activities, which injected her with a cocktail of spider venom and exotic plants to give her powers similar to Spider-Man. Over the years, she would take on the mantles of Madame Web and Arachne, though it’s unclear which version of the character Sydney Sweeney will be portraying.
Notably, Julia Carpenter became Madame Web during the Grim Hunt storyline where Sasha Kravinoff captured her and the original Madame Web for a ritual to revive her husband Kraven. With Sony’s own Kraven the Hunter film coming out at the end of 2023, it’s possible there may be plans to adapt some version of this storyline in a potential crossover film between the two.
Who else is attached to the Madame Web movie?
Madame Web is an upcoming superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, who made her first appearance in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #210. The movie is being directed by S.J. Clarkson, a British television director who has previously worked on episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Marvel’s Defenders.
The Madame Web movie is expected to explore the origin story of the titular character and her first journey in the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters. Its cast also includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Adam Scott and Zosia Mamet.
Madame Web is currently slated to hit theaters on February 16, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
