‘Madame Web’ Flopping At The Box Office Leaves Sony In A ‘Gloomy’ State

An atomic bomb?

Could Sony be taking a step back to reevaluate? The box office failure of Madame Web has seemingly led to changes in the studio’s future Marvel plans.

Madame Web has already made its mark as one of the worst superhero films ever made, along with having one of the worst starts for a movie of its size at the box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this has left a gloomy cloud over Sony’s studio lot. It also nixed any potential plans they had for the future of the franchise set up at the end of the film, with the IP likely not getting any support for a long time.

“We’re not going to see another Madame Web movie for another decade-plus,” An industry veteran told THR. “It failed. Sony tried to make a movie that was a different type of superhero movie.”

With Kraven still on the horizon, it’s unclear how exactly Sony will pivot after the failure of Madame Web. While many may attribute this to the lack of name recognition or women not showing up to the film, it’s important to note that both Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel were runaway successes for Marvel. Sony’s problems with Madame Web go a lot deeper than the surface elements, and fans can only hope they figure those problems out sooner rather than later.

Who else is attached to the Madame Web movie?

Madame Web is an upcoming superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, who made her first appearance in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #210. The movie is being directed by S.J. Clarkson, a British television director who has previously worked on episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Marvel’s Defenders.

The Madame Web movie is expected to explore the origin story of the titular character and her first journey in the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters. Its cast also includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Adam Scott and Zosia Mamet.

Madame Web is currently slated to hit theaters on February 14, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Sony Universe of Marvel Characters and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
