Not much is known about the upcoming Madame Web film despite it swinging into theaters in less than a year. According to one of the film’s producers, they’ll be exploring a new origin for Cassandra Webb that hasn’t been seen in the comics.
Madame Web serves as an interesting intersection in the Spider-Man comics of being an incredibly obscure character that’s also incredibly important. In the comics, Cassandra Webb is simply a blind clairvoyant who helps Spider-Man on a few occasions. Yet she’s also the origin of the entire Spider-Verse, with her role in the 90s cartoon creating the concept as fans know it today.
Her Spider-Verse connection is likely why Sony decided to give her a solo project. Yet when you have such an important character in Cassandra Webb and not much to go off, the obvious choice is to make some changes. According to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, the film is set to flesh out the character for modern audiences:
“It’s really the story of Madame Web,” di Bonaventura tells Comicbook.com. “So, in that respect, if you’re a Spider-Man fan, you’re gonna love the character because you know it from the comic books, which she doesn’t really have that big a character in the comic books, we’re doing the origin story of Madame Web. And so you meet her before she’s actually the person that you know in the comic book and you come to understand how she becomes that person. So, I think that’ll be a really fresh new terrain for the fans.”
Without knowing more about the plot of Madame Web, it’s unclear how Sony plans on changing Cassandra Webb for the film. Though given some leaks have hinted at a Terminator-esque story about Ezekiel Sims hunting down a pregnant Mary Parker, the changes may not end up being for the better.
