Mahershala Ali has teased the role of Blade in a brand new Instagram post.

During Marvel Studios’ last San Diego Comic-Con panel, it was announced that Academy Award-winning actor Mahershala Ali would be stepping into the shoes of Blade for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming iteration of the character. Ali, best known for starring in Moonlight and House of Cards, pitched the Blade casting himself to Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige. Once Feige was on board, all was set for the actor to take on the role previously portrayed by Wesley Snipes in the 2000s.

Details on the upcoming Blade film been mum since the casting reveal at the convention, including from Mahershala Ali himself. However, Ali recently took to Instagram to share a minimalistic image of himself as the character. Ali’s caption was merely the emoji of two swords clashing, signalling Blade’s signature… well, blade.

This design is really cool as it’s super minimalistic and doesn’t put any emphasis at all on the character’s body, giving us a lighter look at the character who is predominantly seen as daunting and brooding. Mahershala Ali reposted the image from artist Max Beech, so it doesn’t mean that this is some official concept art from the folks over at Marvel. Still, this is an absolutely fantastic image and could be the signal that Ali and Marvel will be dropping some Blade info very soon. Currently, no writer or director is attached to the project, though we do know that the project  will be a part of Marvel’s fifth phase of films.

Full details on Mahershala Ali’s Blade are currently unknown, though Kevin Feige confirmed the reboot will be part of Marvel Studios’ Phase 5. The project is said to have come about after Mahershala Ali called Marvel expressing his interest in Blade following his Academy Award win for his performance in Green Book.

In Marvel Comics, Blade is also known as Eric Brooks, the half-human and half-vampire master martial artist whose mother was killed by a vampire during his birth. Since then, Blade has mastered his own fighting style to take on various types of monsters and rid the world of vampires. Wesley Snipes first portrayed the eponymous hero in 1998’s Blade and returned for the first sequel directed by Guillermo del Toro before making what is now his final appearance as the character in Blade Trinity.
